Day in the Life of the MGA Official Scorer

In this month’s website feature, share what your MGA Scorers do each Wednesday to ensure 120 golfers have an organized, competitive and fun experience on official MGA days. Dave Andrews, Official Scorer and this month’s member spotlight put together a summary that highlights the very thorough and time-consuming ‘behind the scenes’ task of getting MGA Wednesdays ready for action. Official MGA Scorer duties
Sunday night (30 minutes)
Send out the list of confirmed and wait-listed golfers to the MGA roster of players to remind everyone to confirm their playing status by 3 PM on Monday. We added this step to reduce the number of changes that we had been making after the Monday deadline.
Monday night (2 hours)
Update handicaps through GHIN.
Confirm the playing roster and note who needs to go out early or late, and who are on the waitlist and need to be scheduled for the afternoon tee times.
Create the foursomes, based on whether the game is flighted or unlighted, and whether it is a 2- or 4-man game. Golf Genius automatically creates foursomes with similar total handicap indexes and pairs players with individuals with whom they have not played with during the season.
Add blinds to threesomes. Adjust foursomes for players who need to go out early or late. Adjust tee times for waitlisted players to afternoon tee times.
Run and send out tee sheets to playing roster.
Run scorecards and tee sheets and send them to Pro Shop.
Create envelope labels and place labels on envelopes. Take envelopes to Pro Shop on Tuesday morning.
Wednesday night (3 hours)
Update scorer's spreadsheet with the number of players in game and number of players per flight for skins. This spreadsheet helps us reconcile the money and determine the payouts for the game and skins.
Count money from envelopes to ensure the correct amount of money has been received.
Match paper scorecards to electronic scorecards. Paper scorecards win if there is a discrepancy.
Run leaderboard. Determine how many places to pay (25-30% of the field or flight).
Update game and skins results in Golf Genius with payout information. Re-run leaderboard to reflect payouts.
Send out results to the field.
Post players scores to GHIN.
Create and stuff envelopes with payout money.
Take envelopes to the pro shop.
Member Spotlight - Dave Andrews
Dave came to the area from Cary, NC where they lived for 28 years, before moving to Brunswick Forest in 2018. As retirement age approached, the family knew they wanted to stay in North Carolina as they had a vacation home on Topsail Island and were familiar with the area. Dave worked for Accenture, a technology consulting firm, for 36 years, and is currently dabbling part-time as an executive advisor for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District.
Dave and his wife Wendy joined CFN back in 2018 and have seen numerous changes to the club, from public to semi-private to private with what Dave refers to as an ‘unexpected benefit” of these transitions. They find fewer golf balls in their backyard! Another obvious benefit is the tremendous friendships formed through both the club and MGA. Dave and Wendy have been married for 39 years with 3 grown children scattered between California, Augusta Ga (Masters tickets for all my friends! Ha Ha) and here in Leland. And three grandchildren to boot!
One of Dave’s fondest golf memories was a golf trip to the magical kingdom of St. Andrews, Scotland staying in the famous Rusacks Hotel overlooking the 18th hole and the iconic clubhouse behind. Although he didn’t get to play the Old Course, just taking in the beauty and history of the “Grey Auld Toon” was a lifetime thrill!
Last but certainly not least, our man Dave who as many of you may know, hits the ball from that other side, and what better way to play his dream foursome than with three left-handed Masters Champions, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, and Mike Weir. Go get them, Dave!
