Spotlight - Justin Britt - CFN Superintendent

The pride of every golf club should be the course conditions. At Cape Fear National, this is our trademark. When traveling to other courses, our membership is comparing and evaluating using CFN as the baseline. And it is a very high bar. Justin Britt is the leader of a team that does exceptional work. Here's a little bit about our behing the scenes all star.
Justin is originally from Laurinburg, NC, and got involved with golf as a young boy when he would play with his dad during the summer months, as his dad was a teacher and able to play during that time. He got involved in golf course maintenance during his early college days at Coastal Carolina where he cut greens and maintained bunkers. After earning his turf degree, he found his passion and began a 13-year journey working as an assistant superintendent at golf courses throughout North and South Carolina, and Virginia. In this time, Justin was able to apply his trade learning as much as he could about different strains of grass, soils, plants, weather patterns, chemicals, irrigation, drainage and equipment, all of which are so integral in managing a golf course.
Justin and his wife Tonya, currently live in the Hampstead area and are the proud parents of 8 dogs!! In his spare time, he loves working on his 1979 Trans Am and vintage motorcycle projects.
Having taken the reigns here at CFN, there are unique challenges to our property that Justin and his team face continuously. Our course was constructed in what was politely called, “Swamp Mud”, leading to poor soils where chemicals and fertilizers are not as effective as other golf courses where those conditions are not as prevalent. This leads to multiple challenges in weed and moisture control which obviously affect playing conditions. To add to the challenge, the design of the course featuring multiple bunkers and waste areas also contribute to the daily obstacles of maintaining our course.
Our course set-up is a huge priority for Justin and his team, none more so than ensuring we have the best- playing turf possible every day. In order, they prioritize green complexes, then fairways, rough and bunker conditions, which are made more challenging given the current labor issues they deal with. Typically, Justin and his assistants are the last eyes on the course before the first golfers tee off in the morning, ensuring that tees, stakes, and cart paths are as presentable as they can be. Justin and his team take great pride in doing the best they can and are always pushing to improve the course conditions within the ever-present constraint of budget, labor, growing season and changing weather patterns.
Make it a point to salute Justin and his team the next time you see them. We are very fortunate to have them. Thanks Justin!! Oh by the way………any chance you can lower the rough…We’re running out of golf balls!
